| Teeth whitening; the options available |

Teeth whitening is a minefield of choice, there are a few really good methods that have been tried, tested and proven, and a few that have not been proven to be good value for money. Starting with home kits, this method is proving to be very popular. It may not be down to the method or the results so much as the cheapness of the method. However, like wine, it isn’t always the dearest ones that turn out to be the best choice. Wine by the way is one the most increasing reasons people are turning to teeth whitening in the first place. Smoking and not looking after your teeth come a close second, with food dyes being the last reason for it. Fashion has a lot to answer for as well; it is the fashion today to have not good teeth so much, as to have healthy looking teeth. The actual need for good strong teeth has now been superseded by a cosmetic need, and that cannot always be a good thing. It isn’t always as simple as it seems either, to hide a stain on the lounge wall will not get rid of the damp or mould, it will simply cover it. That is the equivalent of having a seat belt in the car, but when the car crashes it simply flies off flinging the passenger forward. If you are going to have teeth whitening you will first have to change your habits, for the whiteness only lasts as long as you follow the strict rules. The home kits vary from company to company, and price isn’t always a way to tell if the product is good or not. It consists of a gum shield similar to what a boxer would wear. You mix a bleaching agent into the top and bottom shield and then place it on your teeth for a period of time. The bleach then reacts with the enamel on the teeth and dyes them white, it’s literally that simple. Another method of whitening involves a veneer that is placed over an individual discoloured tooth; the veneers vary from a thin one to a thicker one. The thin ones are the most popular as they are the cheapest, and they are as easy to fit as a false nail. A thicker one is available which also doubles up as a cosmetic tooth covering for wonky or chipped teeth.
